Portage Lakes Fishing Report

Weekly Fishing Report - January 9, 2017

By: Jim Hamrick

Ice fishing season has been a disappointment, the mild weather mixed in with heavy snow fall during arctic blasts kept ice from forming on many lakes. The best lakes have been lakes between the snow belts.

There are no reports from Sugarloaf Lake or Gull Lake. Saturday was the first day that Portage Lake had adequate ice and an army of 60 to 75 anglers covered the lake however, success was poor to nonexistent. Mike Brink and I combined caught 22 keepers on Saturday with five nice crappies, sixteen bluegills and one nice perch. Most anglers in our immediate vicinity reported five or less keepers. There was plenty of action all over the lake for small fish.

With stable ice and the approaching full moon success should improve. The season may be short this year so anglers should make a real effort to get out this week. The best baits have been glow Fiska Jigs or a Chartreuse Tear-Drop. Be sure you are on safe ice!
