Ohio has more than 100 fishing lakes or public lakes that allow fishing, not including Lake Erie. Some of the native fish and fish stocked by the Division of Wildlife include crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, carp, rainbow trout and channel catfish. Fishing lakes in Ohio also offer a regional specialty known as a saugeye, a hybrid of the walleye and sauger fish species.

Caesar Creek Lake

Caesar Creek Lake is in Caesar Creek State Park, which is accessible by Interstate 71 and State Route 73 in Waynesville. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources controls the park and lake, which covers more than 2, 000 acres. The water reaches depths of more than 100 feet, and water near the shore offers stumps and other covering for fish. The best fishing is found near these crowded areas along the shore, but some fishermen prefer the deeper portions, especially in colder weather when the fish move to find warmer water. The lake has four boat ramps, and the state park offers a campground. Caesar Creek State Park 8570 E. State Route 73 Waynesville, OH 45068 513-897-3055 dnr.state.oh.us/parks

Wolf Run Lake

Wolf Run State Park and its Wolf Run Lake are found in Noble County, off Interstate 77. The Department of Natural Resources manages the park and the lake, stocking it with channel catfish, rainbow trout and saugeye each year. During the spring and fall, the shoreline provides the best fishing, especially in the spring when the fish spawn. The best summer fishing is further out on the water, toward the lake's center. The lake has a boat ramp, but boats are limited to 10 horsepower or less. Wolf Run State Park 16170 Wolf Run Road Caldwell, Ohio 43724 740-732-5035 dnr.state.oh.us/parks

Harrison Lake

Fayette, Ohio, is home to Harrison Lake, which is accessible by state routes 66 and 127. The best fishing is found at the shoreline, where the Division of Wildlife places Christmas trees to provide covering for fish. Live bait, including night crawlers and minnows, are the best for fishing at this lake. The lake has one boat launch but allows only boats with electric motors or no motor at all.
