Mineral Springs Lake Ohio
This seems to be a camping site for permanent campers. The website makes the place look fantastic. It isn't. The place is dirty, the bathrooms scarce, no garbage cans, hence the dirty sites and the staff should all be fired. Worst camping ever. We were looking for waterfront camping so we could enjoy fishing & swimming with the kids and dog directly from our campsite. We called about two dozen campsites for Labor Day 2015 and asked questions about water access, swimming and dogs. Yes there was swimming, yes on fishing and dogs were welcome. The website looked great. We got down there, and went to the front desk and paid for our weekend, at $40 a night for our waterfont site. While the campground has 463 sites, they don't have a map. Not one. Not on a wall, no printouts and no directions. They escort you to your site. After being there overnight, I assume it is because there are no bathrooms except at the front office. I saw no other trash receptacles either. Anyhow, we were driven to our waterfront site. It was on about a 40% slope, ending in a 5-6 foot dropoff into the water, which was all moss and yuck anyhow. The center of the lake was clear, but no way to get there. There was a pad that leveled it out for RV campers, which was backfilled with broken slate. Nice and sharp for tents. The firepit has never been cleaned and the whole place was littered with broken glass. To top it off, our campsite had no shade trees. Not anything like the website pictures. So we went back to the front and asked for an actual campsite with water access. This appeared to be a problem and we were given a choice of two other campsites, with no water. The staff was annoyed. We took the "Better" of the two which was sandwiched in between two long term permanent RV's with built in decks and so on. Clearly our previous camper had a permanent site, as when they left, they left the better part of a destroyed homemade sunshade as there was treated lumber strewn about, and a torn up tarp, as well as the fact that the whole campsite was again sharp shale chips, beer cans, broken glass and a fire ring (semi truck wheel) filled with junk to the top, and spilling over. Delightful. The only thing that made it better was that it was much closer to the only bathrooms and had trees for shade. As we'd already driven for hours so we just put up our tents after double tarping the sharp rocks. Junky site, and it was sort of like camping in the inner city somewhere where the trees have started to take back the city. You try to make the best of it after a long drive, so we decided to just camp. Enjoyed all the campers on every sort of quad, buggy and so on getting drunk and driving like fools all over the camp until 11 or so, and well after dark. My highlight was a drunk camper holding a beer in one hand, a baby in the other while smoking and driving. Awesome. Watch out for them as they sure aren't sober. Unless they are underage, as they were driving all over the place too. Scary, but most everyone was nice. Got up the next day with the objective of swimming. Went to go swimming, and of course it doesn't open until the crack of noon. Went back to the front desk. You can swim in the lake, but ONLY at their controlled access spot, no dogs of course and yes, they charge you. This completely contradicted what they told us on the phone. And the punk at the front desk needs to learn customer service. Instead he was condescending and yelling at my pregnant wife. I guess using proper English to address a problem is lost. He decided that rather than listen, he'd get pissed and call his mommy, the manager. Mommy was out looking for a nurse, as some unfortunate had crashed on the campsite and, according to other campers was unresponsive. They sent her out in a helicopter. Anyhow, mom finally arrived and the quality customer service continued with the phrase "Which one of you is throwing a Fit?" Solid. And we're just looking to swim. Terrible terrible customer service, and it starts at the top and the entire staff followed suit. They must be owners, as otherwise they'd be unemployed. So after telling mom that her son also had questionable customer service skills, here comes her twenty something year old son wagging his finger in my face and threatening me for insulting his mother. While I hadn't actually insulted anyone, and was just trying to make these people go away. I told the kid to go away. They ALL need customer service lessons. At this point we broke camp and left. All in all, the campground was dirty, but the "Staff" was awful. Totally awful. If you are a weekend camper, you have hundreds of other campgrounds in Ohio. ANY other one would be better.
I will never ever ever (EVER) even consider going back to this place. It was absolutely one of the worst trips I have ever booked, and we travel (and camp) frequently. Rude and incompetent staff. Nothing was what I was told it would be when I called to book our campsite. I went through a list of about 50 questions to make sure I knew what to plan for and almost every single piece of information they gave me over the phone ended up being false. Our "waterfront site" had NO access to the water, the water in front of the site was absolutely disgusting, and the entire campsite was littered with broken beer bottles. We chose this place based on the waterfront site so you can imagine the disappointment upon arrival. We also brought our dog with us so for the time we were there our family had to split up to swim and fish because someone had to stay behind with the dog at the campsite... the entire reason we wanted access to the water from our site in the first place. Zackery Smalley (the owner's son) raised his voice at me (in front of my children) and was argumentative about information he initially gave me over the phone that was false. He told me I was causing a scene, as he yelled at me, and asked me to leave the general store and wait outside for a manager. When his mother "the manager" came to talk to me, she approached me with the line, "Who's the one throwin' a fit?" When she arrived her son also came outside and began attempting to argue with me again. My husband rolled his eyes and this kid was literally in my husband's face wagging his finger telling him, "Don't you look at my ma like that." I am not even kidding. This went on for several minutes while my husband (with the patience of a saint) attempted to calm this kid down because the kid looked like he was about to cry. The mother/manager also continued to be rude and defend her son's actions up to the point we realized we were arguing with ignorance and not going to get anywhere. Even though we booked 2 nights, we left after 1 and made it home in time to try and salvage what was left of our Labor Day weekend. The only PRO I can list is that we met some pretty nice people at the campgrounds who were nice enough to give us info on fishing, swimming, etc after we had been misinformed by the staff several times. There are hundreds of places to camp in Ohio... save yourself the headache and annoyance and choose somewhere else. You will be so thankful you did.
