Cross Country Skiing
Northern Ohio is home to world class cross country skiing trails, through the densely wooded and beautiful forests of the coast and past some incredibly memorable Ohio scenery. Long known among cross country skiing connoisseurs as an ideal location for trails running in December and January, for enthusiasts or first time cross country skiers, there is a trail for everyone.
North Coast Inland Trail - Huron County (Norwalk to Bellevue)
The trail passes among hardwood forests, crosses several rivers and offers wide views in some areas. The trail follows part of the former Toledo, Norwalk & Cleveland Railroad (later New York Central's Norwalk Branch), which is being converted to trails across northern Ohio. The Huron County segment is managed by Firelands Rails to Trails, an all-volunteer, non-profit group.

The Huron River Greenway MetroPark Trail has two separate segments, each just under 1 mile long. The northern (Huron) segment runs from DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve off River Road and heads south about 0.9 mile, ending at a gate on River View Drive in Franklin Flats. The southern (Milan) segment runs from the end of N. Main Street and heads north 0.9 mile to end at a barricade across the trail.

Steel Mill Trail
The Steel Mill Trail is a 2-mile continuation of the Bridgeway Trail, which lies within the Black River Reservation, a scenic wooded park in Lorain. The Steel Mill Trail picks up at the north end of the Bridgeway Trail by the Days Dam Picnic Area and continues north through the old slag fields left behind from the U.S. Steel Mill.

Summer and fall aren't the only times that you can experience the incredible fishing that Northern Ohio has to offer. For the bold and intrepid Ohio anglers looking for a new challenge, the lakes and streams of northern Ohio provide the perfect opportunity to go ice fishing. What’s biting down below? Area ice fishing specialists say you can catch the same species when ice fishing as you hooked during the summer months, including crappie, bluegill, bass and catfish, as well as perch, walleye and saugeye. In fact, some of the most sought after ice fish are saugeyes (a cross between the sauger and a walleye), because they are so active in the winter. If you are interested in going ice fishing out on Lake Erie, it is strongly recommended that you hire a guide with experience to help keep you safe and assist in locating ideal fishing locations.
For more information about ice fishing on Lake Erie and in other parts of Northern Ohio, please visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife.
Sledding and Toboggan runs
Finally, a family experience everyone can enjoy this winter season in Northern Ohio. Northern Ohio is home to some of the best sledding hills and toboggan runs in the midwest, and when the snow falls, these little hills turn into the ideal downhills for your kids or yourself to enjoy. Often part of local natural park systems, there are perfect sledding spots dotting the coast line for you to explore and enjoy with your little ones this winter season.
